This Privacy Policy explains what information Marked collects, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. It applies to the Marked website and app.

Working draft. This policy is pending legal review and is provided for transparency about our current practices. For any privacy question, email info@markedai.io.

1. Information We Collect

We collect the information needed to run Marked and mark your work. This falls into three groups.

Information you provide directly

  • Account details — your name, email address, and password (or a Google sign-in).
  • Onboarding details — your year group, current grade, and exam board.
  • Your work — the answers, essays, and paragraphs you submit for marking, and the feedback generated for them.
  • Household details — for family plans, the link between a parent account and each student profile.
  • Billing details — handled by our payment processor; we do not store full card numbers.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage and activity, such as submissions, streaks, and pages viewed.
  • Device and connection information, such as browser type and approximate location from your IP address.
  • Cookies and similar technologies (see “Cookies and Tracking”).

Information from other services

  • If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture.
  • Our payment processor tells us your subscription status so we can unlock the right features.

2. How We Use Information

We use your information to:

  • Provide Marked’s services — marking your work and returning structured feedback and grades.
  • Personalise your learning — dashboards, grade predictions, streaks, and revision suggestions.
  • Manage your account — sign-in, subscriptions, and family profiles.
  • Communicate with you — service emails, verification, and the weekly parent digest (which you can opt out of).
  • Improve the platform — understanding which features help students improve.
  • Keep the service secure — detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, and misuse.
  • Produce analytics — aggregated, non-identifying insights about how Marked is used.

3. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only where necessary:

  • With service providers who help us operate Marked — for example our payment processor, email delivery provider, hosting, and the AI processing providers that generate marking and feedback. They may only use the data to provide their service to us.
  • Within your household — a parent on a family plan can see progress and revision activity for the linked student profiles.
  • Where required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.
  • As part of a business transfer (such as a merger or acquisition), subject to this policy.

4. Data Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information — including encryption in transit, access controls, and restricting access to those who need it. No method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your data and to respond promptly if an issue arises.

5. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Delete your account and associated personal information.
  • Export a copy of your data in a portable format.
  • Object to, or restrict, certain processing where applicable.
  • Manage communication preferences, including opting out of the parent digest.

To exercise any of these, contact us at info@markedai.io. You may also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.

6. Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies for:

  • Authentication — a secure session cookie that keeps you signed in.
  • Preferences — remembering choices such as your theme.
  • Analytics and functionality — understanding usage so we can improve the platform.

You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling essential cookies may stop you from signing in.

7. Data Retention

We keep your information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy — to provide the service, meet legal and accounting requirements, and resolve disputes. When you close your account, we delete or anonymise your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we are required to retain it.

8. Children’s Privacy

Marked is designed for GCSE-level students and is intended to be used with the involvement of a parent, guardian, or school where appropriate. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children in a way that conflicts with applicable law. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information without the necessary consent, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

9. International Transfers

Your information may be processed in countries other than the one you live in, including by the service providers described above. Where information is transferred internationally, we take steps intended to ensure it remains protected in line with this policy and applicable law.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you through the service or by email. Your continued use of Marked after an update means you accept the revised policy.

11. Contact Us
